Infrastructure and Urban Transport

Olsztyn is located approximately midway between Warszaw (212 km) and Gdańsk (170 km). The city is situated at intersection of the main national roads: no. 16 leading from western Poland to Lithuania as well as no. 5 being the branch of State Road 7 (Żukowo-Gdańsk-Elbląg-Olsztynek-Nidzica-Modlin-Warszawa-Kraków-Chyżne).

There is a functioning airport serving both domestic and international business traffic located within the administrative borders of Olsztyn. The nearest international airport is located appox. 60 km from Olsztyn – Olsztyn-Mazury Airport in Szymany near Szczytno. Moreover, within 200 km from the city, there are 3 other international airports available, providing flights to a few dozen cities in Poland and in the world (Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport – approx. 180 km, Warsaw Chopin Airport – approx. 220 km, Modlin Airport – approx. 180 km).

Olsztyn constitutes also an important regional railway node. The main railway lines crossing the city are: no. 216 regional line to Działdowo, no. 220 regional line to Bogaczewo and a railway connection between Olsztyn and Szymany. There are also other important railways located a relatively short distance away, i.e.: no. 9/E65 national railway trunk line (Gdynia-Gdańsk-Iława-Warszawa-Żylina, approx. 70 km from the city), no. 38 national line (Białystok-Ełk-Korsze-Bartoszyce, approx. 70 km away) and a planned international E75 Rail Baltica line (Warszawa-Białystok-Ełk-Suwałki-Trakiszki, approx. 160 km from Olsztyn).

The closest seaports are situated in Elbląg (100 km away) and in Gdańsk (170 km away).

Within the City of Olsztyn, the municipal transportation system is currently provided by 40 bus lines, including 37 day lines, 11 suburban lines and 2 night lines. There has also been introduced a tramway infrastructure in late 2015 – currently 15 trams provide transportation on 3 lines.
